The Focus on Learning: Joint ACS WASC/HIDOE Process Guide is an ongoing school improvement process that assists a school in taking an in-depth look at what currently exists and what needs to be improved in relation to student learning and the school’s program.

Through the Focus on Learning (FOL) process a school fulfills the requirements for accreditation and forms the basis for the School Strategic Plan for its school including the annual Academic and Financial Plan required by Act 51, 2004 Session Laws of Hawaii. In addition, adult schools have embraced the program entitled Equipped for the Future, content standards for adult learners.

Initial Visit

As noted on our Getting Started page all Public Hawaii schools follow the initial visit procedures, utilizing the ACS WASC Initial Visit Procedures Manual.

Elementary School Accreditation: In 2012, the Hawaii State Board of Education (BOE) approved the Department of Education’s five-year project to ensure all public schools are accredited in alignment with BOE/DOE Strategic Plan. By partnering with ACS WASC, the HIDOE aims for its 159 elementary schools to be fully accredited by school year 2018–19.

ACS WASC/HIDOE Tools: Criteria Indicators and Prompts: Word Doc File

This document is a useful tool to assist the school in the analysis of their program based on the ACS WASC criteria. The file contains indicators, prompts, and suggested areas to analyze for each criterion. The prompts correlate with the indicators and space is provided for each prompt to fill in your school’s findings and provide evidence for each criterion. These responses form the basis of Chapter IV of the Self-Study Report.
